Hospitals
How medical institutions are tiered6- Clinic, hospital, general hospital, tertiary hospital — what is the difference? What separates a clinic from a hospital is not bed count but whether it mainly sees outpatients or inpatients. Bed thresholds only start at the hospital tier.
- Gangnam is not one district, and plastic surgery labelling splits by fieldGangnam Station and Apgujeong Rodeo are not within walking distance of each other, yet search groups them all as Gangnam. What labelling does establish is the sub-district, the fields a clinic leads with, and how much it discloses about its surgeons.
- Regenerative-medicine designation certifies the institution, not the individual treatmentKorea's Ministry of Health and Welfare publishes a searchable list of designated regenerative medicine institutions. But the law requires separate review of each treatment plan, so appearing on the list does not mean a clinic's anti-ageing procedure has been approved.
- Skincare and scalp venues split into medical and non-medical — what facial, head spa and scalp care each meanThe sign's name is not the dividing line — the licensed category is. A dermatology clinic, an aesthetic salon, a hair salon's head spa and a scalp clinic fall under different laws, may do different things, and keep different hours. What each word means at each kind of venue, why a head spa cannot treat hair loss, and thirteen named Myeongdong venues sorted by licensed category with their closing times and prices.
- What is a registered foreign patient provider?Treating foreign patients requires registration with a provincial governor, backed by a board-certified specialist per department and malpractice liability insurance. The register is publicly searchable.
- When do you need a referral letter in Korea? The line is not hospital size but whether the institution is a tertiary hospital. Without a referral you are not turned away — you pay the entire bill yourself.
Care & Insurance
Seeing a doctor and what is covered9- Anterior aesthetic dentistry has a ladder ordered by how much tooth is removedWhitening removes nothing, composite only the damaged area, veneers the front enamel, and a crown the whole tooth. Removed tooth structure does not come back, so the order runs from least removal upward.
- Can foreign residents join Korea's national health insurance?Take a job and you are enrolled from your first working day. Otherwise you must have lived in Korea for six months — and that enrollment is automatic, not something you apply for.
- Covered versus non-covered care — what is the difference?Covered care means national health insurance pays part of the cost; non-covered care is paid entirely by the patient. What counts as non-covered is fixed by law as a list.
- Evening and weekend dental hours are the exception, and Sunday rarer stillExtended weekday evenings almost always run on named days only, and Sunday opening is far scarcer. Of six clinics around Nowon Station, one held regular Sunday hours.
- Implant timelines are set by osseointegration and grafting, not by the brandPlacement to final prosthesis typically runs two to six months, and most of that is waiting. Bone grafting or a sinus lift extends it further, independently of which manufacturer is used.
- In orthodontics the variable is duration and continuity of care, not the applianceOne to three years of visits every four to eight weeks, followed by a separate retention phase. Whether you can make those appointments, and whether the same clinician sees them through, bites before appliance type does.
- Visitors have seven booking routes, and they guarantee different thingsBooking in English does not make two channels equivalent. Naver Reservation, direct messaging, a foreigner-facing platform such as K-Beauty Station, Creatrip, activity platforms such as Klook, KKday or Trazy, a concierge service and walking in each guarantee something different — price shown, how it confirms, what changes and refunds look like, and how wide the choice is. One table of seven routes, and one naming the 12 Gangnam clinics bookable in English, checked 16 September 2026.
- What kinds of national health screening exist in Korea?General screening runs every two years, or annually for non-office workers. Cancer screening sets its own age range and interval for each cancer.
- Where a wisdom tooth is extracted depends on impaction and nerve proximityA fully erupted third molar and two impacted lower ones send you to different places from the outset. What divides them is how deeply the tooth sits in bone and how close it lies to the inferior alveolar canal or the maxillary sinus.
Beauty & Procedures
How cosmetic treatments are classified15- A forehead lift and a forehead reduction are different operationsA lift raises and fixes sagging forehead skin and brows; a reduction shortens the forehead. A thread lift is not surgery at all. The names appear side by side in search, but they address different problems.
- A skin booster is a category of injectables, not one productHyaluronic acid, PN, PDRN, PDLLA and exosome products all sit under the same Korean label despite different active ingredients. So a clinic saying it offers skin boosters does not tell you what you would be injected with.
- A tone-up sunscreen combines UV protection with colour correctionSPF and PA ratings require MFDS functional review or notification before they can be printed. The tone-up effect itself is not a reviewed function — yet in the literature the tint is treated as a visible-light photoprotection element.
- Dark under-eyes have four distinct causes, and fat repositioning addresses oneA shadow cast by protruding fat, loose skin, pigmentation, and vessels showing through thin skin are separate problems — and some of them are not surgical questions at all.
- Derma cosmetics is not a legal category in KoreaThe label groups products distributed through clinics or positioned as dermatological. Distribution channel is not a property of the product, so what actually differs shows up only in the ingredient list.
- Dermatology or plastic surgery — how are they divided? The two specialties differ in scope and invasiveness. And a sign reading "dermatology" does not always mean a board-certified dermatologist — Korean signage rules let you tell the difference.
- Head spa step counts are not an industry standardThe 15-step and 18-step labels originate in one salon's programme names and are borrowed across the market. The same number does not mean the same contents, and published prices run from ₩44,000 to ₩366,000.
- Korea's whitening functional claim splits into two branchesThe Enforcement Rule of the Cosmetics Act separates preventing melanin deposition, and so suppressing melasma and freckles, from lightening melanin already deposited. Which branch a product cleared is not visible on the label.
- PDRN ampoules are not required to state their concentrationProducts that put a percentage in the name sit on the same shelf as products that never state one, and among those that do state it the figures run from 3% to 5%. It splits within a single brand, so brand-level comparison does not hold.
- Primary and revision rhinoplasty start from different questionsA first operation starts from what shape to build. A revision starts from how much cartilage remains and how far the tissue has scarred. Whether nasal obstruction is treated alongside is a second axis.
- Regeneration cream is not a legal product categoryPanthenol, cica, PDRN and ceramide creams are grouped under one market label despite belonging to different ingredient families. User complaints cluster not on ingredients but on greasiness.
- Ulthera and Ulthera Prime are different device generationsPrime is the successor device, but Korean clinics do not label the two consistently and both are often written simply as Ulthera. Across seven Gangnam clinics, the share of Ulthera pages naming Prime ranged from 0% to 60%.
- What sets the price of a personal colour analysis in SeoulThe same hour under the same lights sells from about ₩89,000 to ₩260,000 in Seoul. Six things account for the gap — session length, language, group size, what you take away, whether styling or a photo shoot is bundled, and the studio's diagnostic system — and none of them is accuracy.
- What to check before a cosmetic procedure in KoreaSurgery, transfusion and general anesthesia require written consent by law, and five items must be explained to you. Not choosing by testimonials and before-and-after photos matters just as much.
- Why is cosmetic work not covered by health insurance?Schedule 2 of the benefits rule names cosmetic procedures individually as non-covered. A functional operation on the same body part can still be covered — but it is a different procedure with a different name.

2- What happens at a Korean clinic's front desk — registration, identity, deposits and receiptsA Korean clinic visit begins at the reception desk (접수 jeopsu), and for a foreign patient four things happen there that a booking page does not mention. Identity check against the booking name, registration before the last reception time, any deposit, and the receipt and itemised statement to ask for — the VAT refund on cosmetic procedures ended on 31 December 2025, so the receipt is for your records and insurance at home, not for the airport.
- Why Korean services ask for a phone number — identity verification (본인확인) explainedKorean online services verify identity through a mobile number tied to a resident registration, a system built for residents. Foreign visitors met it as a wall. What the system is, why a phone number stands in for identity, which routes now exist for visitors — passport verification, alien registration — and what still requires a Korean number.
