Skincare and scalp venues split into medical and non-medical — what facial, head spa and scalp care each mean

The sign's name is not the dividing line — the licensed category is. A dermatology clinic, an aesthetic salon, a hair salon's head spa and a scalp clinic fall under different laws, may do different things, and keep different hours. What each word means at each kind of venue, why a head spa cannot treat hair loss, and thirteen named Myeongdong venues sorted by licensed category with their closing times and prices.

A dermatology clinic and a head spa can carry the same words on the sign. What divides them is the licensed category — medical institutions under the Medical Service Act on one side, beauty and hair businesses on the other.

Words like “facial”, “spa”, “head spa” and “clinic” are used freely across both sides. The line is whether the venue is a medical institution. That decides what may be done there. It also decides where a dispute goes.

The hours expose the boundary

Sort a district’s venues by closing time and the clinics close first. In Myeongdong on 12 August 2026 the six dermatology clinics closed between 20:00 and 21:00. Every one of them either closed on Sunday (three) or cut Sunday back to 17:00 (three). The non-medical venues ran until between 21:00 and midnight. All of them opened on Sunday. The two distributions barely overlap. The current venue-by-venue rundown of types, prices and ratings for the same district is in where to go for a facial in Myeongdong.

The pattern follows from structure rather than coincidence. A medical institution needs licensed staff present. Treatment carries follow-up and observation, and holiday operation requires a separate staffing plan. Being open late in the evening or on a Sunday is itself a signal that a venue is more likely to be non-medical.

It is a tendency, not a test. The clearest counter-example is a clinic. GU Clinic Gangnam Branch is a dermatology clinic on K-Beauty Station, rated 4.9 with 10,000+ reviews, at 54 Seocho-daero 77-gil in Seocho-gu. It runs 10:30–21:00 Monday to Friday and 10:30–19:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. That is the latest regular weekday closing among the twelve Gangnam skin clinics listed there; AB Clinic also reaches 21:00, but on Fridays only. It opens seven days a week and on public holidays (checked 16 September 2026). Six of those twelve open on Sunday. A late sign narrows the odds. Only the licensed category settles what may be done inside.

Scalp: spa or clinic?

A Korean head spa is non-medical scalp care performed by a hairdresser. The programme is cleansing, massage, treatment and a blow-dry, sometimes a fifteen- or eighteen-step run on a spa bed. It may not claim to treat hair loss or scalp disease. The “diagnosis” with a scalp camera at the start and end is an observation for the customer, not a medical diagnosis. Symptoms that need a diagnosis — progressive hair loss, inflammation, persistent flaking — belong at a scalp clinic, which is a medical institution with a doctor.

Step counts in head spa programmes are each salon’s own naming and not an industry standard: head spa step counts are not an industry standard. The programmes with published prices, compared: Korean head spa in Seoul.

Why the distinction matters

The same treatment name carries different permitted scope depending on which category performs it. Analysis of Korean court decisions shows that disputes over cosmetic procedures do occur and turn on who performed them and what was explained. The blurring of that boundary is itself a subject of international study.

What the listings show

Read a district’s listings in one pass and the split is visible without knowing a single licence number. In Myeongdong on 16 September 2026, three of the seven skin clinics listed on K-Beauty Station were closed on Sunday. Every salon, spa and shop listed in the same district was open — MIMILINE Myeongdong Branch to 23:00, the two JUNO HAIR branches to 21:00, a pharmacy to midnight. Gangnam runs the same way. Six of the twelve Gangnam skin clinics close on Sunday. The six that do open finish between 17:00 and 20:30 — four of those six at 17:00 or 17:30.

The medical venues close earliest and take Sundays off; the non-medical ones keep the same hours seven days a week. Day-by-day hours per venue, including the Saturday rows that split rather than shorten: getting a facial in Myeongdong.

Frequently asked questions

How does an aesthetics salon differ from a dermatology clinic in Korea?

They fall under different laws. A dermatology clinic is a medical institution under the Medical Service Act and may perform medical procedures. An aesthetics salon is not a medical institution and may not; crossing that line raises unlicensed medical practice.

Is a Korean head spa a medical treatment?

No. A head spa at a hair salon is non-medical scalp care under the beauty business rules, and it may not claim to treat scalp disease or hair loss. A scalp clinic is a medical institution with a doctor. The camera "diagnosis" at a spa is an observation, not a medical diagnosis.

Can I tell them apart from the name?

Not reliably. Spa, clinic and salon are used across both. Firmer signals are Korea's medical institution naming rules and the pattern of opening hours — clinics close earlier and more often on Sundays.
