A tone-up sunscreen combines UV protection with colour correction
SPF and PA ratings require MFDS functional review or notification before they can be printed. The tone-up effect itself is not a reviewed function — yet in the literature the tint is treated as a visible-light photoprotection element.

A tone-up sunscreen adds colour correction to UV protection. The two functions do not hold the same regulatory status.
“Tone-up” is marketing language for an immediate brightening effect. “Sunscreen” is a functional cosmetic for UV protection. One product carries two things with different regulatory status.
| Function | Regulatory status |
|---|---|
| UV protection (SPF, PA printed) | Functional cosmetic — MFDS review or notification per product |
| Colour correction (tone-up) | Not a reviewed function |
The ratings saturate
Ratings as printed on brand websites, checked 12 August 2026.
| Product | Brand | SPF / PA |
|---|---|---|
| PDRN Dewy Tone-up Sunscreen | Genabelle | SPF50+ / PA++++ |
| Birch Juice Moisturizing Tone-up | Round Lab | SPF50+ / PA++++ |
| Balanceful Cica Tone-up | Torriden | SPF50+ / PA++++ |
| UV Defense Me No Sebum | Make Prem | SPF50+ / PA++++ |
All four read identically. SPF50+ and PA++++ are the ceilings of their scales, so the rating carries no discriminating power in this band. What differs is filter type — inorganic, organic or hybrid — and feel. In the survey, only one product disclosed its filter type.
Complaints cluster on three things
Hwahae review tags converted to a share of total reviews. A product with 27 reviews and one with 2,101 cannot be compared on raw counts.
| Product (reviews) | White cast | Pilling | Dryness / grease |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round Lab Birch Juice (2,101) | not tallied | not tallied | greasy 18.2% |
| Torriden Balanceful Cica (1,295) | 6.4% | 2.6% | not hydrating 12.1% |
| Genabelle PDRN Dewy (27) | 11.1% | 7.4% | not hydrating 14.8% · greasy 14.8% |
Twenty-seven reviews carry a very wide confidence interval. A percentage from a small sample does not belong on the same line as one from a large sample.
Reading the tint as photoprotection
In the Korean market, tone-up is sold mostly as a cosmetic effect. International literature instead treats iron-oxide tinted sunscreens as photoprotection in the visible-light range — a response to the finding that wavelengths conventional UV filters do not block contribute to pigmentary disease. Korea’s SPF and PA labelling does not cover that range, so the difference is invisible in the ratings.
From the source
A tone-up sunscreen is sun care that adds colour correction to UV protection, and printing an SPF or PA rating requires MFDS functional review or notification for UV protection.

Frequently asked questions
Is the tone-up effect itself reviewed by the MFDS?
No. UV protection is a functional-cosmetic claim, so printing SPF and PA requires review or notification per product. Colour correction is not among the reviewed functions.
If two products both say SPF50+ / PA++++, do they perform identically?
The ratings saturate at the top of the scale. All five products surveyed in August 2026 read SPF50+ / PA++++. Once ratings match, what differs is the filter type and the feel — and review complaints cluster on white cast, pilling and dryness.
Is the tint unrelated to protection?
Not unrelated. International literature treats iron-oxide tinted sunscreens as a means of photoprotection in the visible-light range beyond UV, and clinical work has compared tinted against untinted products in patients with pigmentary disorders.
