Ulthera and Ulthera Prime are different device generations

Prime is the successor device, but Korean clinics do not label the two consistently and both are often written simply as Ulthera. Across seven Gangnam clinics, the share of Ulthera pages naming Prime ranged from 0% to 60%.

Last checked:

Ulthera Prime is the successor to Ulthera, and the two generations are frequently presented under the single label “Ulthera”.

Ulthera is a microfocused ultrasound (MFU) lifting device, and Ulthera Prime is its successor. The principle is identical — focused ultrasound delivers heat into the deep dermis to induce tissue contraction and a healing response — with the newer generation presented as improved in how the treatment area is visualised and in speed.

The difficulty is labelling. Clinics distinguish generations inconsistently.

How far the labelling varies

Counted by retrieving the sitemaps of seven Gangnam-area clinic websites on 13 August 2026, measuring what share of Korean-language pages covering Ulthera explicitly named Prime.

ClinicUlthera pagesNaming PrimeShare
GU Clinic15960.0%
Seye Clinic271451.9%
V&MJ Dermatology2314.3%
Here Dermatology100.0%
Nine Dermatology Gangnam0——
Toxnfill Gangnam0——
PHD Dermatology Apgujeong0——

More material does not mean clearer generation labelling. V&MJ Dermatology named Prime on 1 of 23 Ulthera pages, while GU Clinic, with fewer pages, had the highest share. Three of the seven had no Korean-language Ulthera page at all.

What the literature settles, and what it does not

ItemStatus
Skin tightening effect of microfocused ultrasoundReported in systematic review
Difference in outcome by operator or device generationNo standardised comparative evidence
Objective outcome measuresFlagged as needing improvement in the 2023 review

The 2023 systematic review screened 693 studies and included 16, reporting brow lifts of 0.47–1.7 mm and submental area reductions of 26–45 mm². At day 90, 92% showed improvement in tightening or wrinkles — but patient-reported improvement was lower, at 42% by day 90 and 53% by day 360. That gap between assessor and self-rating is worth carrying into a consultation about expectations. Moderate pain and transient erythema were common; rare complications including dysaesthesia, bruising and mandibular burns were reported in 2%.

What to verify

  • Device name — Ulthera or Prime. Confirm at consultation rather than from the website.
  • Genuine-product disclosure — varies by clinic. Two of the seven above disclosed authenticity certification, and for one of those it concerned Thermage rather than Ulthera.
  • Operator — outcomes differ by operator with the same device, and that difference appears on no website.

From the source

Ulthera Prime is the successor to Ulthera. The principle is the same — ultrasound delivers heat to deep skin layers to induce contraction — and it is presented as an improved generation in how the treatment area is checked and in treatment speed.

The problem is that clinic labelling is not standardised. (…) All three patterns are mixed together, so “we do Ulthera” does not tell you which device it is.

Frequently asked questions

How does Ulthera Prime differ from Ulthera?

Prime is the successor device. The principle is the same — focused ultrasound delivers heat to deep skin layers to induce contraction — and it is presented as an improved generation in how the treatment area is visualised and in treatment speed.

If a clinic page just says Ulthera, which device is it?

It is not determined. Some clinics hold both devices and label them separately, some offer only Prime, and some do not distinguish generations at all. The wording alone does not settle it, so ask for the device name at consultation.

Is the effect of microfocused ultrasound supported in the literature?

A 2023 systematic review of 16 studies reported brow lifts of 0.47 to 1.7 mm and improvement in skin tightening or wrinkles in 92% of patients at day 90. Patient-reported improvement was lower, at 42% by day 90.
